Granny’s Tacos: Austin Food Truck for Breakfast Tacos

Granny’s Tacos in East Austin is a popular food truck serving some of my favorite breakfast tacos, made with homemade tortillas and salsas. Guanajuato native Maria Rios started the truck in 2016, using a repurposed ambulance named after her grandmother and great-grandmother.

While Austin is best known for its barbecue and music, it’s also a city obsessed with breakfast tacos. Everyone has their go-to spot, and you can find these delicious, affordable tacos everywhere—from high-end restaurants to food trucks.

Granny’s Tacos has become a favorite for breakfast and lunch, serving tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, nachos, fries, and more. Also, they make their own flour and corn tortillas, salsas, and sauces from scratch.

On my recent visit to Austin, I stopped by the food truck on Austin’s East 7th Street, a lively area known for its great food and local hangouts.

Visiting the Granny’s Tacos Food Truck

If you are walking east down 7th street from downtown Austin, you might miss the small food truck located down an alley behind an outdoor gear shop.

Despite being just minutes from downtown, Granny’s Tacos felt off the beaten path.

Though a bit hidden, it was the kind of place that attracted locals, foodies, and breakfast taco lovers. These are the types of small businesses and local eateries I love to visit on my travels.

Like most food trucks, you order at the window. Since this was my first visit, the friendly worker in the truck gave me his recommendations. He recommended the breakfast tacos and chilaquil tacos.

For those who don’t like to carry cash, they accepted credit cards along with Apple Pay and Google Pay.

After ordering, I grabbed a seat at one of the picnic tables in front of the truck. The wait was longer than expected since it was a busy Sunday afternoon. I waited about 20 minutes for my food, but it was worth it.

While waiting, I enjoyed talking with other people, listening to music playing in the background, and browsing the clothing market next to the truck.

Granny’s Tacos Menu

My biggest problem with the menu at Granny’s Tacos was deciding what to order. For a food truck, there were many great options.

Whether you want something familiar or are an adventurous eater, you will find something interesting on the menu.

Items included breakfast tacos, lunch tacos, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, nachos, fries, and other Tex-Mex favorites.

Most people order the breakfast tacos. There were plenty of great taco options, all served with eggs, including bean, potato, chorizo, bacon, broccoli, cactus, and spinach.

For drinks, you had Mexican Coca-Cola, Fresca, Jarritos, and water.

Homemade Salsas and Sauces

Even though they are a small food truck, Granny’s Tacos makes their salsas and sauces from scratch.

My favorite was the red sauce. It was spicy and smoky, and it tasted like habanero and guajillo. I couldn’t get enough of it.

If you don’t like spicy foods, you might want to try the green sauce. This mild sauce was creamy, rich, smooth, and tasted of avocado and cilantro. You get all the flavor without the heat.

Machaca Taco

I ordered the Machaca Taco. This taco had steak, egg, pico de gallo, cheese, and avocado. At first glance, the taco appeared small. But it was filling.

The highlight was the large chunks of steak piled inside a fresh, lightly toasted homemade flour tortilla. Each piece of beef was flavorful and perfectly seasoned.

I could taste a hint of citrus from the marinade. The marinade also helped tenderize the steak, allowing for a tender bite with no chewy bits.

Without eggs, it was just a regular taco. But add fluffy, lightly browned eggs, and now you have a breakfast taco. It might sound odd, but it worked.

The avocado added a buttery texture to each bite and complemented the tender steak and fluffy eggs.

Sprinkled over the top was melted white cheese and fresh pico de gallo. While mild, the cheese brought the taco together. The colorful and flavorful pico de gallo, another must, finished off this taco.

Potato, Chorizo, and Egg Breakfast Taco

Next up was the Potato, Chorizo, and Egg Breakfast Taco served on a soft and chewy flour tortilla.

As mentioned before, you can’t have a breakfast taco without eggs. While tough to see in the photo, there was a generous amount of fluffy scrambled eggs in this taco.

Mixed in with the eggs was grilled chorizo. Chorizo can sometimes be greasy or oily, but that wasn’t the case. The browned chorizo added a smoky, salty, and rich flavor to each bite.

There were two types of potatoes, large chunks and shredded. While both types of potatoes were tender and soft, they each added a different texture to each bite.

Lightly melted shredded cheese brought the entire taco together. I could taste the gooey white cheese in every bite as it melted between the chorizo, scrambled eggs, and potatoes.

For something so simple, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the flavors and textures of the Potato, Chorizo, and Egg Breakfast Taco.

Service at Granny’s Tacos

The service at Granny’s Tacos was excellent. Also, with such an extensive menu, I appreciated how the friendly worker in the truck gave me his recommendations. All turned out to be delicious.

However, be patient, especially on weekends. With food prepared fresh to order, the wait can be slow. I ordered at the window and waited about 20 minutes until they called my name, but it was worth it.

Conclusion

Granny’s Tacos was my first food truck experience and breakfast taco in Austin. And it did not disappoint. While the wait was longer than expected, everything was delicious.
