Before Mammoth Brewing Company and The EATery, Whiskey Creek was one of the most popular restaurants and happy hours in Mammoth Lakes.
When I found out Whiskey Creek would be closing, I almost cried. For years, I stopped by Whiskey Creek for a drink or bite to eat after a long day of snowboarding at Mammoth Mountain in the winter or fishing in the summer.
Luckily, Mammoth Brewing Company and The EATery took its place, continuing the tradition of Whiskey Creek in Mammoth Lakes, California.
Interior of Mammoth Brewing Company
Mammoth Brewing Company had two sections: the tasting room and The EATery. While they share the same space, you order drinks and food separately.
There are two ways to order. First, find a seat at a table, inside or outside, and order by QR code through your smartphone. There is one menu for food and one menu for beers.
The second way to order is by walking inside and placing your order at the cashier. As with the QR code, you will find two lines for beer and food.
If you place your order with the cashier inside, take your number, and find a place to sit inside or outside. A server will bring your food out to your table.
Additional seating and a separate full bar were on the second floor. During my visit, the bar wasn’t in use, so I had to walk downstairs to grab another drink or order food.
The outdoor patio is my favorite place to sit and enjoy my beer and food while visiting Mammoth Brewing Company.
It’s the best place to sit in the summer with everyone enjoying the warm weather, from hikers to campers to fishermen.
And it’s cold but still beautiful in the winter, especially with the snow-capped mountains in the background.
And the outdoor seating is dog-friendly.
Mammoth Brewing Company Craft Beers
If you love craft beer as much as I do, you will be pleasantly surprised by the selection of available beers.
You had your regulars and seasonals. I am a big fan of the Double Nut Brown Porter and Epic IPA. Just go easy on the IPAs being at almost 8,000 feet.
There were also a few wines available. Since I rarely drink wine, I can’t recommend anything, but I’m sure they all taste great.
The EATery at Mammoth Brewing Company Menu
The menu at The EATery at Mammoth Brewing Company had to be one of the most unique menus I have seen at a brewery. You had your typical bar fare, but every item seemed unique, including the Po’boy with pulled pork, a Philly cheese steak with Pale Ale fondue, and the flatbread pizza with fennel sausage.
Every dish on the menu paired perfectly with a cold brew. Deciding what to order was more difficult than expected, as everything sounded delicious.
With a paper menu, the menu changes often, depending on the seasons and what is fresh that day. So don’t assume what I order will be on the menu during your visit.

It’s Not a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich
When I read the menu, the first thing that caught my attention was the It’s Not a Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich ($16.00). The sandwich came with grilled skirt steak, shishito peppers, shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, and Pale Ale fondue.
Thanks to its textbook sear, the outside of each piece of steak had a crunchy, smoky crust. Each bite of the meat was tender and juicy, exactly how a quality piece of steak should be. The seasoning was spot on, with a perfect balance of salt and pepper. The meat could not have been any better.
Mixed with the meat were roasted shishito peppers, sautéed grilled sweet onions, and caramelized shiitake mushrooms. The vegetables were smoky and crunchy. On the side were a few slices of sweet, salty, and crunchy pickles. The pickles added even more flavor and texture to each bite.
A thick layer of pale ale fondue covered the meat and vegetables and oozed onto the plate below. I don’t often find myself eating fondue, especially on a sandwich at a brewery, but that might have to change after today. The creamy and rich melted cheese was light in flavor with a hint of the taste of Pale Ale.
With so much packed inside, I expected soggy bread. Fortunately, this was not the case. The thick bread held together, even with steak and melted cheese piled on top. The massive piece of bread was crunchy and toasted on the outside while soft and airy on the inside.
I loved this steak sandwich because I felt I got my money’s worth. The steak, bread, cheese, and vegetables were excellent, and their flavors and textures were well-balanced. I couldn’t expect anything more.
Service
While I sometimes order from the counter inside, I usually order with my smartphone and QR code from my table on my visits to Mammoth Brewing Company and The EATery. Ordering that way is easy, especially in today’s world.
Therefore, my interaction with the staff during most visits is limited. That said, my food and drinks always arrive promptly, and all the staff seems friendly and always around to answer questions or to handle any issues.
Conclusion
Since I can remember, I have been visiting Mammoth Lakes and Whiskey Creek. When Whiskey Creek closed, I was worried what would take its place. Luckily, Mammoth Brewing Company moved in, along with The EATery, and created something special.
When I visited Whiskey Creek for happy hour, I always ordered their Tri-Tip Sandwich. I ordered it religiously. It was that good. When Whiskey Creek closed, I was sad that I would never be able to try this fantastic sandwich again.
So was it better than the tri-tip sandwich from the days of Whiskey Creek? Not only was it better, it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had.
Mammoth Brewing Company and The EATery is now my new spot for beer and delicious food whenever I am in town. Sitting at one of the tables outside on a warm summer day with a cold beer in hand is what life is all about. My only problem will be deciding what to order and try next.
